Denver Bronco Injury List Growing

NFL enthusiasts preparing for the Denver Broncos August 15 preseason opener would be well advised to check the NFL injury reports. Denver's injury epidemic in training camp will make for some unhappy Bronco fans.

Denver lost its top two tailbacks to injury last week during workouts when Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter had to leave the field within minutes of each other. However, those were not the only injuries. Offensive right guard Chris Kuper limped off with an ankle injury while outside linebacker Jarvis Moss broke a bone in his left hand.

"It's just a freak thing that happens," Champ Bailey, cornerback and team leader, stated. "We've got to live with it." Kenny McKinley and Josh Barrett were also lost for the season. Through Friday of last week, a total of 13 Denver Bronco players had missed at least 1 practice.

Beyond that, linebacker and special teams ace Darrell Reid was trying to get up to speed after off season knee surgery while left tackle Ryan Clady was still recovering from an injury that occurred in a spring basketball competition. Moss is anticipated to miss a minimum of two weeks of practice time while Kuper's injury is not as considerable but will nonetheless cost him practice time.

"I've been on teams where we've been decimated early, and I've been on teams, similar to last year, where we don't have many problems," stated head coach Josh McDaniels. "I think those are freak things that happen, and our job is to manage them as best we can and handle them and move forward." Moreno will be a costly loss to Denver as he is anticipated to miss a number of weeks after a hamstring injury in a 7-on-7 drill. Denver hopes he will heal in time for the regular season. Buckhalter suffered a back injury and his status is still under review.

Outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil may miss the entire season while starting inside linebacker DJ Williams has been missing from the practice field as a result of shoulder and knee issues, which makes Denver's defense even less of an asset. Moss was scheduled to replace Dumervil.

Denver sustained a horrible collapse at the end of a year ago after a 6-0 beginning and the injury bug has not helped build confidence for 2010.

Denver plays in the AFC West which is not the strongest division in the league. San Diego is the favorite again since they've dominated the division in recent seasons, but the Chargers did not get better in the off-season. Denver is still capable of beating both the Chiefs and the Raiders, though both squads do look better.

The Denver Broncos have a schedule that puts them in the mix in the playoff picture in the AFC. They get to play squads from the NFC West this season and that division is considered the poorest in the NFL. If Denver can make the most of the situation by defeating squads like St. Louis, Seattle, Arizona and San Francisco, they might challenge the Chargers for the division title this season.
